DUBAI (Reuters) – Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Airways announced on Monday that it will launch daily flights to Tel Aviv in March after the UAE and Israel forged formal ties that year.

The flight will begin on March 28 and is scheduled to connect with Etihad services to and from China, Thailand, India and Australia, the national airline said in a statement.

The announcement comes as the aviation industry faces its worst crisis ever due to the coronavirus pandemic that has ruined demand for air travel.

Etihad has cut jobs and advanced plans to evolve into a medium-sized airline focused on moving passengers to and from Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE.

Abu Dhabi does not allow non-residents to enter the emirate at its airport and has not said when that coronavirus-related restriction would be lifted.

The neighboring Dubai allows foreign visitors access.

State-run Flydubai will launch direct flights to Tel Aviv this month, the Dubai airport operator said El Al (TA :), Israir, Arkia will begin air traffic between Tel Aviv and Dubai in December.

Etihad, flydubai and Israel ‘El Al have operated charter flights between the UAE and Israel in the past few months.
