(Reuters) – Some Finnish lawmakers’ email accounts have been compromised in a cyber attack on parliament, the authorities said on Monday.

Neither the Speaker of Parliament nor the National Bureau of Investigation gave details of what information, if any, was lost or when the attack took place, except that it took place in the fall.

“The act is not accidental. At this point in time, there is a possibility that unknown actors could obtain information through the hacking, either for the benefit of a foreign state or to harm Finland,” Tero Muurman, chief inspector at NBI, told a statement.

While Finland has seen a number of denial-of-service attacks on government IT infrastructure in recent years that have shut websites down for several hours, Muurman said this was more important.

“This case is exceptional in Finland, grave due to the quality of the target and unfortunate for the victims,” he said.

Parliament said it was cooperating with the NBI in investigating the attack.

“The cyber strike against parliament is a serious attack on our democracy and Finnish society,” said spokesman Anu Vehvilainen in a statement.
