WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Joe Biden calls for funding to investigate complaints about white supremacist beliefs with U.S. immigration authorities. This emerges from a summary of his budget proposal published on Friday for the coming financial year.
Biden’s administration is calling on Congress to raise funding levels for labor regulators within the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Services (ICE (NYSE :)) to $ 470 million, which an increase of 22% compared to the current level.
The additional funding would ensure that complaints from workers – “including those related to white supremacy or ideological and non-ideological beliefs” – are promptly investigated, according to a summary of Biden’s budget proposal.
It wasn’t immediately clear whether certain incidents sparked calls for funding to combat white supremacy at the CBP and ICE. The US Department of Homeland Security and the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The White House budget proposal is a call from Congress to provide funding in fiscal year 2022, which begins October 1, 2021. The document reflects Biden’s position on the expenses that will ultimately have to be appropriated by Congress.
