President-elect Joe Biden will announce the cabinet appointment on Tuesday, the new White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain confirmed on Sunday.
“If you want to know which Cabinet Agencies they are and who will be in those Cabinet Agencies, you have to wait for the President-elect to say so himself on Tuesday,” Klain said in an interview with ABC News.
The president-elect already announced the members of his coronavirus task force before naming senior White House officials. Last week, Biden said he had decided who to nominate for Treasury Secretary and make the Thanksgiving announcement.
Potential candidates for Secretary of the Treasury include economist Lael Brainard, a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, and Janet Yellen, former Federal Reserve chairman. Both would be the first woman to serve in the role. Roger Ferguson, the CEO of TIAA and another top contender, would be the first black to hold the office.
Biden said the Treasury Department’s election would be “accepted by all elements of the Democratic Party,” although the former vice president’s personnel decisions are likely to be criticized as he weighs demands from the party’s progressive base and a potentially split Senate.
Jennifer Psaki, a senior adviser to the Biden transition team, said in a CNN interview on Sunday that the president-elect “wants a variety of votes at the table.”
When asked if the Biden cabinet will have more progressive members than President Barack Obama’s first cabinet, Psaki said Biden’s team will “look like America” in terms of diversity and background.
Biden’s move to announce cabinet decisions and advance the presidential transition comes as President Donald Trump still refuses to vote in the November 3 election, even after the legal challenges of the Trump campaign were put down in Pennsylvania on Saturday night.
The General Services Administration has yet to determine Biden’s victory, effectively preventing Biden’s team from receiving government resources that are normally dedicated to the president’s transition, such as: B. Information and distribution schedule for a coronavirus vaccine.
Klain said Trump’s allegations of electoral fraud and litigation during the race were “caustic” and “harmful” but stressed that his actions would not change the election result. However, he said it blocked Biden’s ability to build a new government and get background information on cabinet candidates.
“Our transition will not have access to agency officials to help develop our plans and there will be a lot of emphasis on this vaccine rollout plan which will be critical in the early days of a Biden presidency,” said Klain. “We don’t have access to it … We are unable to get any background information about cabinet candidates.”
“There is a clear impact,” added Klain. “These effects are escalating every day and I hope the GSA administrator will get the job done.”
