WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Monday that Democrats could potentially try to pass much of President Joe Biden’s coronavirus relief bill using a procedure that will bypass a Republican filibuster and could be passed by majority vote.
Biden wants Congress to pass a $ 1.9 trillion pandemic aid proposal, but many Republicans have opposed the price. The Senate is split 50:50 between Democrats and Republicans, with Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris holding the tie.
60 votes are required to overcome a procedural hurdle known as filibuster to passing legislation.
The reconciliation allows the Senate to pass important laws with a simple majority.
“We can do a lot of the COVID bill with the reconciliation, and we will certainly use that if they try to block this immediate COVID bill,” Schumer told MSNBC.
Biden, who took office last Wednesday, campaigned for a promise to take aggressive action against the pandemic, which his Republican predecessor, President Donald Trump, had often downplayed.
