MELBOURNE (Reuters) – Behind Hsieh Su-wei’s sweeping third-round win over Sara Errani at the Australian Open on Friday was a simple plan: “Avoid the bagel.”

The Taiwanese surprise package has been badly hit in all three previous games against the Italian veteran, and each loss resulted in a 6-0 loss in one of the sets.

On the first day of the Chinese New Year celebrations, the 35-year-old finished the streak with a 6-4-2-2-6-7-5 win at the John Cain Arena, which earned her a third appearance in the last 16 at Melbourne Park. following 2008 and 2018.

“It’s so good. I have a record against Errani. Every time I have a bagel,” Hsieh said in court.

“Before the game, I thought I’d rather not eat a bagel today.”

Hsieh was 5-3 behind in the decisive set but won the last four games in a row to secure Errani’s victory and a clash with 19th seed Marketa Vondrousova.

There will be no fans in attendance as Hsieh is applying for a first Grand Slam quarter-final. The state of Victoria must lock up for five days starting Saturday to contain an outbreak of COVID-19.

For the fun-loving Hsieh who has a number of favorite Melbourne restaurants, this means no need to eat out.

“I’m not worried about the crowd (missing). I think it is good for everyone to make sure we are all safe to help the government,” she said.

“I’m just worried about my Uber (NYSE 🙂 Eats – if I can get something to eat in my room.”
