(Reuters) – Lewis Hamilton said he was only human after making a rare mistake on a roller coaster at an Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Imola on Sunday in Imola.
The mistake left the seven-time world champion staring at a rare resignation before recovering to fight back and finish second.
In a race that resembled a high-speed game of snakes and ladders, the Mercedes driver stalled from pole position to second place, staring at the barriers, fearing his race was over, then finishing ninth and a lap down and back to the podium.
It was like an afternoon in his youth when he fought his way back through the field with “a seedy old go-kart”.
In the end, the Briton also drove the fastest lap and earned a valuable bonus point that kept him in the championship lead despite the defeat against Red Bull rival and race winner Max Verstappen.
“We’re only human so it was a mistake to learn from,” he said after sliding over to Tosa and nudging the wall of the tire.
“There was only one dry line and I think I was in a bit of a hurry to get past them all.”
For what appeared to be old age, he sat in the car, struggling to reverse, before carefully leading the car backwards over the gravel and back onto the track with a damaged front wing.
“I remember just sitting there and looking at the barrier and refusing to believe the race was over. I refusing to believe the race was over,” he said.
“I could have just parked the car and got out of course, but I’m grateful I didn’t … It’s an amazing lesson to be broadcast and experience.”
When sparks flew from the front of the car, Hamilton returned to the pits.
Red flags after a collision between Finnish teammate Valtteri Bottas and Williams (NYSE 🙂 ‘George Russell, also a driver under contract with Mercedes, has improved everything and given him a platform to recharge when the race is restarted.
“I’m just grateful that I can get started again and get back into the race,” said Hamilton. “It’s not how you fall. It’s how you get up.”
