WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Dozens of Senate Republicans called on the Biden administration Friday to withdraw what they believed to be “divisive” education that emphasized slavery and the contributions of black Americans to history and citizenship education in US schools would ask.

In the recent volley of a burgeoning race for race in America, 39 Republican lawmakers, led by Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell, said the proposed Department of Education policy would steer established curricula onto a “politicized and divisive agenda” that addressed the shortcomings of the country is aligned.

“Young Americans deserve a rigorous understanding of civics and American history. They must understand both our successes and our failures,” wrote Republican senators in an April 29 letter to Education Secretary Miguel Cardona. The letter was published on Friday.

“Americans do not need or want their tax dollars to be diverted from promoting the principles that unite our nation to promote radical ideologies designed to divide us.”

A US Department of Education spokesman had no immediate comment.

Legislature focused on mentioning the New York Times’ Pulitzer Prize-winning 1619 project. The initiative, which traces the history of the United States since the arrival of the first enslaved Africans in colonial Virginia, was a frequent target of former President Donald Trump, who sought instead to promote “patriotic” education.

The letter came two days after Senator Tim Scott, the only black Republican in the Senate, stated in the Republican response to President Joe Biden’s address to Congress that “America is not a racist country.” Scott also defended a new Republican electoral law in Georgia that the Democrats denounced as a return to Jim Crow segregation.

The proposed policy would support a doctrine that “reflects the breadth and depth of our nation’s diverse history and the vital role that diversity plays in our nation’s democracy,” said a government website.

It would encourage schools to embrace projects that address “the systemic marginalization, prejudice, inequalities, and discriminatory policies and practices in American history”.

The Republican Party, which broke following Trump’s false claims that his 2020 presidential election was stolen, has attempted to brand Biden as a left-controlled split leader.
