The Challenger collection is going through “ghost races”, through which the US crew from Reuters is canceled
(Reuters) – With American Magic still working to fix the damage to their boat after it capsized on Sunday, America’s Cup organizers said that in the Challenger Series round-robin action this weekend, single-yacht Ghost races will take place.
The American team’s skipper, Terry Hutchinson, said Monday that they would not be at the start this weekend after their yacht “Patriot” was churned by an unusual wind.
The Challenger Series winner has the right to face the New Zealand Defender Team for the America’s Cup from March 6th.
American Magic’s absence prompted organizers to cancel the race on Friday and hold the remaining match-ups for Round Robin Three and Four on Saturday and Sunday.
Challengers Ineos Team UK and Luna Rossa from Italy have yet to cross the starting line to score points from their encounters against American Magic.
“The ‘ghost race’ will be suspended a few minutes after the start,” the organizers said in a statement. “The rule of 25 minutes between the two starts does not apply to these ‘ghost races’.”
The Challenger Series finals begin on February 13th.
