PANIQUI, Philippines (Reuters) – Hundreds attended the funeral of a woman and her son who were shot dead by an off duty police officer in the Philippines on Sunday, a week after a video of the incident went viral on social media and leaked to the public the police had outraged brutality.

Members of the public who had come together as relatives and friends in the province of Tarlac, north of Manila, paid their last respects to Sonya Gregorio, 52, and her 25-year-old son Frank Gregorio, who were shot in the head after an argument over noise .

The shooting, recorded on a cell phone by a member of the Gregorio family, sparked allegations from critics and human rights activists that President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs had created a culture of police impunity.

Policeman Jonel Nuezca was seen in the video where he argued violently with the Gregorios over the use of a homemade noise maker, which is usually used to celebrate New Years, before he shot the mother and son.

Nuezca surrendered to police the night of the incident and faces two murders. The government has promised a thorough investigation.

The victims’ family has forgiven Nuezca but is still demanding justice, said Avelina San Jose, a relative of the Gregorios. “He should face the consequences of the law,” she said.

Duterte, who has spoken of killing criminals and made promises to protect law enforcement during a war on drugs and crime, condemned the shooting and warned that rogue officers have to pay hell.
