Small Business Saturday encourages consumers to shop locally

This year’s Small Business Saturday, a day shoppers are encouraged to spend with local businesses, is on December 5th.

In its eighth year, the grassroots campaign returns just three days after the English ban was lifted. In last year’s campaign, an estimated £ 800 million was spent on small businesses across the UK.

The organizers of Small Business Saturday have matched companies with mentors and offered free virtual workshops that focus on tools to deal with the pandemic, such as: B. Online usage, diversification, cash flow management and improving entrepreneurial attitudes and mental health.

More consumer support for small businesses this year

Research by Small Business Saturday and its key supporter, American Express, shows an “increasing affection” for small businesses. A large proportion also want to support local jobs (47 percent), while almost a third (31 percent) said small businesses had worked very hard this year and wanted them to be successful. Over four out of five consider local shop workers to be the front.

People are most happy when hairdressers (34 percent), restaurants (34 percent) and cafes (31 percent) reopen their doors when the lockdown restrictions are lifted.

Small Business Minister Paul Scully said: “It is now more important than ever for people to step behind their local businesses, whether it be by getting Christmas presents, ordering essentials online, or grabbing a takeaway from their favorite café or restaurant to fetch.”

“Small Business Saturday is not just one event, it is millions of actions that have all been taken and that are making a big impact to boost small businesses during this difficult time,” said Michelle Ovens, director of Small Business Saturday UK.

“This year, we encourage people to show their support not just on Small Business Saturday itself, but in all the different ways they can be sure of for the coming weeks, months, and beyond.”

The importance of the social in your small business

Research from Yell Business also revealed how the global pandemic has accelerated communications between businesses and customers. Over three quarters (76 percent) of SMEs introduced new communication methods in 2020.

The advent of instant messaging tools like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and other social messaging platforms as important communication tools for businesses was identified by Sprout Social.

Over half (53 percent) of SMEs surveyed said instant messaging was the key to business success after COVID-19, while 39 percent said inquiries increased thanks to the use of instant messaging services during the pandemic. Meanwhile, 38 percent said they saw greater customer satisfaction and 33 percent saw an increase in repeat business.

Since November 1, 2020, the message volume for small businesses has increased by 4,058 percent.

“There is a sense of urgency with the #ShopSmall and #ShopLocal calls to action as there are real concerns that some of our favorite small businesses may not survive,” said Lauren Cover, content specialist at Sprout Social. “Over 432,200 small business tweets in the last 14 weeks contained the word ‘help’ or ‘support’. 50,459 of those tweets were from the UK, suggesting that consumers are aware of the challenges small businesses face and want to show their support. “
