Given that health care is more important than ever today, it should come as no surprise that two of the top three jobs in the US are in this field.

As in many industries, the health sector is also affected by the Covid crisis. Since February, jobs have fallen by 542,000. Still, 42 of the 100 Best Jobs compiled by US News & World Report are healthcare roles or healthcare roles. One of the criteria is the projected employment growth for the roles.

So what does it take to get one of these jobs, and if so, what do the roles actually involve? Here’s a look at the top three.

1. Medical assistant

The job is similar to that of a general internist, and in most states a medical assistant must work with a licensed surgeon or doctor.

“PAs diagnose disease, develop and manage treatment plans, prescribe medications, and act as primary caregivers,” said Beth R. Smolko, president of the American Academy of PAs.

They work in doctors’ offices, community health centers, educational institutions and correctional facilities.

You need a master’s degree. Admission is very competitive and preliminary courses in basic and behavioral science are required.

Additionally, you will need some healthcare experience, such as a paramedic or paramedic, said Smolko, who worked as a PA in family and internal medicine for several years. She is now the program director and division director for the PA Medicine Program at Frostburg State University, Maryland.

At school, expect classroom tuition and over 2,000 hours of clinical training. It is this rotation experience that can help you find a job. About 75% of pre-pandemic students received at least two to three offers before graduation, Smolko said.

Employment in this area is projected to grow 31% between 2019 and 2029 – much faster than the average for all occupations, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

2. Software developer

A software developer creates applications that run on computers or other devices. You can do anything from writing new code to maintaining existing platforms.

A Bachelor’s Degree Is Not Required: According to a 2018 survey by Stack Overflow, an online developer community, only 46% of software developers have a bachelor’s degree. Around 25% have a master’s degree and 27% have no degree.

If you want to skip college, you can go to boot camp for coding and software training.

Once you have the skills, show them off in your portfolio, which is a must for job interviews. Create a website that looks professional and has links to your projects, says software developer Andy Sterkowitz, who is also a career coach for those looking to get into the field.

“Companies are willing to hire people with no experience and no degree,” said Sterkowitz, who got his first job at a small company after teaching himself to code.

“There’s a lot of demand,” he added. “The best you can do is prove that you can do this with your real work.”

Employment in this area is expected to increase by 22% from 2019 to 2029, according to the BLS.

3rd nurse

Nurses do physical exams, prescribe medications, and approve treatments, among other things. You mainly work in primary care, but you can also specialize in orthopedics, pulmonology and other areas.

“We’re really focused on wellness and disease prevention, as well as deep insight into patient education,” said Sophia L. Thomas, who practices at a community health center in New Orleans. She is also the president of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.

Less than half of the US states allow nurses to practice with full authority without being affiliated with a doctor.

To become a nurse, you must first be a nurse. That means you already have a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing and an RN license.
