A handful of states have started raising unemployment benefits by $ 300 a week or are signaling that workers will start receiving the payments starting this week. Others expect the aid to kick in later this month.
Workers in Arizona, California, New York and Rhode Island will see their first increased payments this week, according to state employment agencies. California and New York are states # 1 and # 2, respectively, based on the number of workers receiving unemployment benefits.
According to official information, the states of Connecticut and Washington want to pay out the surcharge from mid-January.

According to the state Department for Employment Development, workers in California were already paid the weekly $ 300 supplement on Sunday.
However, the first tranche is only available to 1.3 million Californians who receive regular government benefits or federal grants under the extended-term program that kicks off during periods of high unemployment, the agency said.
Services for others – nearly 3 million people – will be delayed until “revised programming for the expanded federal programs is in place,” the agency said.
These federal programs include unemployment assistance in the event of pandemics and compensation in the event of unemployment in the event of pandemics.
All workers in New York and Rhode Island, including those receiving PUA and PEUC benefits, will now receive the $ 300 top-up along with that week’s payments, according to state labor officials.
The Rhode Island recipients will receive the funds as early as Monday, according to Margaux Fontaine, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Labor and Education.
According to Tasya Peterson, a spokeswoman for the state’s Department of Economic Security, Arizona residents could apply for an additional $ 300 weekly starting Sunday. Payments started flowing this week along with regular employee benefits, she said.
Connecticut labor officials are expected to begin paying the $ 300 improvement in mid-January, according to a statement from Governor Ned Lamont and state labor officer Kurt Westby.
Washington state expects two weeks’ worth of payments on January 15, according to information on the state’s unemployment website. It usually takes a few days for banks to process payments after they are issued, the agency said.
According to spokeswoman Angela Delli-Santi, the New Jersey Department of Labor has reprogrammed its systems to manage the $ 300 benefit and will begin distributing it soon once user tests are successfully completed.
The $ 300 weekly surcharge follows two more surcharges waived during the coronavirus pandemic: a $ 600 per week scholarship provided by the CARES Act through July, followed by a weekly payment of $ 300 Dollars for lost wage assistance, which is offered for up to six weeks through early September.
While some states were able to disburse this aid quickly, it took many weeks – even months – to do so.
