WASHINGTON (Reuters) – White House coronavirus task force member Anthony Fauci will meet with members of President-elect Joe Biden’s team on Thursday for initial discussions on how the new administration will fight the virus, the killed around 273,000 Americans.
Fauci, the U.S. government’s foremost infectious disease expert, told CBS News that he had spoken to the new White House chief of staff Ron Klain several times, but those discussions were not substantial.
He said he expected a wider discussion with members of the Biden team who will work on a smooth transition and the new government’s priorities in fighting the pandemic.
“I’m going to meet you virtually today from Zoom. So today will be the first day that there will be substantive discussions about the transition between me and the Biden team,” said Fauci. “I am very pleased that today we are having the first discussion of a number of things, vaccinations and the like.”
Fauci, the director of the National Institute for Allergies and Infectious Diseases, has been the most prominent member of the White House task force since the pandemic began and often contradicts President Donald Trump on fighting the virus. CNN also confirmed the meeting.
Trump’s administration delayed the transition to Biden’s team for weeks after the November 3 presidential election, despite the spike in coronavirus in the United States. Fauci told CBS he wished the transition process had started earlier.
Trump, a Republican, has challenged the election results and the government only kicked off the transition on November 23. The Democrat Biden will take office on January 20th.
